Voices of Participating Students
Japanese - Lu Hanyu (International Department, Grade 10)
Engaging in the multilingual talent competition has bestowed numerous benefits upon me. Through creating posters and crafting calligraphy works, I’ve deepened my understanding of various facets of Japanese culture, scenery, cuisine, and reinforced my knowledge of kana. This competition has ignited my interest in Japan and the Japanese language.
French - Ren Xuanmo (Grade 7)
Anticipating my two weekly French classes, the multilingual competition provided an intriguing platform for me to learn French. The preparation process not only imparted new knowledge but also solidified my grasp of it. Through this activity, I gained insights into French multiculturalism, realizing that “no pain, no gain.” Building a work scaffold to presenting a splendid piece, I owe it all to the support and cooperation of teachers and family. Merci! Receiving an award is truly an honor.
German - Wang Yuhe (Grade 10)
The multilingual talent competition enabled me to utilize my acquired language skills to create chapters and showcase them on posters. Merging this with my semester’s tour experience to Mount Huangshan, I introduced the local conditions and customs in German, attempting to integrate Anhui, Jiangnan, and German culture. The distinct poetic and descriptive style of the German language surprised me, providing an avenue to appreciate other countries’ cultures while understanding a facet of my own.
Spanish - Ji Hairui (Grade 7)
Choosing to learn Spanish initially lacked a specific answer, but as I delved deeper, I developed a genuine appreciation for the language and culture. This participation in the Multilingual Talent Competition proved a valuable experience. Winning the second prize for my recitation work surprised me deeply, but the journey of preparation left an even greater impression. From stumbling through my first reading to emotionally charged recordings, my Spanish spelling ability significantly improved, instilling a sense of self-challenge and achievement. Thanks to classmates for their votes and Teacher Wang for constant encouragement. Gratitude aside, we welcome other students to learn Spanish! Bienvenidos!
Russian - Xia Fan (Grade 11)
I am honored to receive an award in this competition. Students meticulously prepared their works, enhancing their language learning level and ability, evident in the high-quality results achieved. Whether calligraphy, recitation, or theatrical performance, these diverse forms reveal the shared pursuit of literature and art within a language, as well as a nation’s unique historical and cultural sedimentation. This competition heightened students’ enthusiasm and provided insights into the charm of other languages, allowing us to understand this ever-changing world from a broader, diverse perspective.
Korean - Zhao Jinghan (Grade 7)
In the multilingual competition, I showcased my foreign language learning achievements through a handwritten poster, securing a first prize. The process was immensely gratifying. For me, painting wasn’t the challenge; integrating the relevant knowledge of a second foreign language - Korean - into my presentation was. My interest in Korean culture and language motivated me to learn, and the competition, filled with unfamiliar words and sentences, spurred me to utilize dictionaries and online searches. Consequently, my Korean proficiency improved, enriching my extracurricular life and broadening my knowledge.
Latin - Chajichu (International Department, Grade 10)
The intricate writing system, inflection forms, the halo of medieval aristocracy, and the gradually fading “dead” language from people’s lives have cast a mysterious veil over Latin. Yet, upon truly delving into its study, I discovered a closer relationship with this language than imagined. The shining Latin language family injects vitality into world languages and lays the foundation for language development in English, Spanish, French, and more. Learning Latin feels like searching for flowers on a winding path, asking willows in a secluded pavilion. It compels me to pick up my pen, sensing history flowing and wandering at the tip. Only by delving into the vast and profound essence of Latin can I feel the brilliance of world civilization.
This year’s multilingual talent competition has concluded successfully. In the future, we’ll continue hosting this event, providing a stage for language enthusiasts and talented students to showcase their abilities!
